Blood Flow Restriction Therapy

Blood Flow Restriction Therapy (BFR) is a powerful technique, approved by the FDA, which uses a system that resembles a blood pressure cuff. The system is placed on an injured arm or leg limiting blood flow to the limb while the client performs light exercise. This allows the client to work the muscle without placing excessive weight on the limb. BFR has many applications, some of which include surgery rehab, healing of broken or sprained arms, wrists, legs, feet or ankles, and anyone who wants to gain strength without lifting heavy weights.

BFR is gaining popularity within the rehabilitation industry, although its history dates back to 1973 when Yoshiaki Sato developed his Kaatsu pneumatic bands. “Ka” means additional and “Atsu” means pressure in Japanese, and these bands have evolved and now used worldwide for rehab. It is well documented how this therapy provides the ability to increase muscle strength, improve nervous system function, bone mineral density, and overall vascular health.
